Econet Ltd has developed a water meter remote reading device ESCU, which makes it possible to anyone monitor the consumption, pressure, and quality of water. Moreover, one can detect leaks in time.
At the same time the remotely readable water meter will be the first Finnish Sigfox-water meter.
Sigfox network is a global wireless network, which is designed for Internet of things. At the moment, a company called Connected Finland is building Sigfox network to Finland. Econet made a cooperation agreement with Connected Finland in November.
- From technological point of view, using radio network for remote reading is an excellent choice, since radio modem consumes less power than GPRS-devices, says business development director Antti Herlevi.
In practice, the radio modem is installed to the water meter, which is connected to the ESCU- device. The readings of the water meter are transmitted through Sigfox network to a cloud service.
At best, one subscription costs tens of cents of Euros per month for the customer. According to Herlevi the goal is to sell thousands of subscriptions. The device and subscription can be sold as a package for the customer.
- Expanding to the international markets would be easy now, because more Sigfox network is being built. In addition, Internet of Things is a global trend, says Herlevi.
The coverage area of the Sigfox network is expanding constantly, but mobile phone networks are still needed in the most isolated areas.
The product development of the ESCU, which works in Sigfox network, took two months. It was fast, because the Sigfox network is technologically simple, and it does not require separate power source. Therefore, the product cost is moderate, and the circuit board can fit into smaller case than the ESCU, which operates in mobile network.
